Emmys: 2014 Halftime Report

We’re a bottle of champagne in over here, and in case you aren’t following my live blog on Facebook and Twitter (hit those buttons at the top!), here are some halftime highlights.

  • Admittedly, I’m not exactly Seth Meyers’s biggest fan and was singing some old school Destiny’s Child-like “no, no, no, no, no”‘s when it was announced that he was hosting. I expected a weird version of Weekend Update-for-awards shows, but I was pleasantly surprised by how funny he was. Safe yet clever with enough of a “TV lover” insider angle to keep pop buffs like me and my perennial awards show couch co-pilot, Andrea, entertained (admittedly to varying degrees). Big bonus points for the “Fraggle Rock” reference and comedies-as-dramas punchline.
  • Ty Burrell semi-surprises with his Supporting Actor win, for an episode in which he wears a purple dress and long wig. Well deserved.
  • The countdowns to upcoming presenters in the bottom right corner of the screen are classic.
  • Allison Janney wins the second of two very deserved Emmys in the span of a week. All hail the Beyonce of television.
  • The funny and serious bits where actors talk about the best direction they got are equally awesome. More of this, please.
  • Speaking of wanting more, the “man on the street” segment with that maniac commentator was genius.
  • JLD and JP reign the comedy categories once again. Good stuff.
  • The Academy is in love with “Sherlock,” but gives the big prize to “The Normal Heart.” And all is right with the world.
  • Hollywood’s universal golden tan is on full display when the Emmys are held in August.

See you on Facebook and Twitter for more!
