It’s one way to get a golden glow in the dead of winter.
I know, I know: you just took down the holiday decorations and probably still have a stale snowman Peep and half eaten bag of Lindt truffles semi-secretly stashed in the dark corners of your cabinet. You’re back to the grind and gridlock, resolutions in tow, as deadlines and obligations come flooding in after a week (or two, or perhaps even three) of a blissful year-end unplug. The days are long, the weather—at least here in NYC—is arctic-style ugly, and it gets dark so early that you need a lamp to each your lunch.
With so much going on this first week of the New Year and the winter doldrums threatening to make their annual cameo, I figured it was worth a reminder that we’ve officially entered the (other) most wonderful time of the year: awards season.
Yup, it’s here, guys. Like, ‘tomorrow’ kind of ‘here.’ And though the Hollywood Film Awards and inaugural People Magazine Awards got a jump on handing out hardware before the break, from now until the Oscars on February 22nd, it’s a whiz-bang whirlwind of red carpets, glittery gowns, semi-sincere acceptance speeches and armchair prognosticating.
Let the Hollywood games begin.
First up is the always fun yet completely irrelevant they-already-know-they-won People’s Choice Awards tomorrow night on CBS. Being one of the ‘people,’ I voted for this one (you still can, too!), and with a ballot that included such categories as Favorite TV Character We Miss Most, the evening promises to be a light-hearted celebrity-filled good time.
Things start to get serious on Sunday, though, when the Golden Globes air on NBC. Now, that’s ‘serious’ only in the sense that the winners can sometimes be a loose indicator of how things will shake out with the Academy, because with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler back at the podium for hosting duties, it will be anything but beyond the awards themselves. Let the champagne and sassy commentary flow.
More on all of that later, but in the meantime, here’s your cheat sheet for all the other big shows you have to look forward to that will add a little bit of LA (and British) glamour to these next seven weeks of winter:
January 15: Critic’s Choice Movie Awards
January 25: Screen Actors Guild Awards
February 8: BAFTA Awards
February 21: Film Independent Spirit Awards
February 22: Oscars
If Karen Walker doesn’t win – is Karen Walker nominated? – for character we miss the most, what is the real point?
If only! All of the nominees left their shows this year, so we’d need a time machine stocked with the best booze and pills from the early 2000s to conjure Ms. Walker back into the mix.
Don’t forget Rosario and Stan!
How could I?! Classics then, now and forever.
